A radiator that is hot across the top and cold along the bottom edge is telling you something quite specific. Air collects at the top of a radiator, so trapped air gives you the opposite pattern: cold at the top, warm below. Cold at the bottom means something heavier than water is sitting in there, and that something is usually sludge.

What the black sludge in a heating system is

The dark material that comes out of a neglected system is mostly iron oxide. Inside a sealed heating circuit, water, oxygen and steel react, and the corrosion products they produce circulate with the flow. Being heavier than water, they settle wherever the flow slows down: the bottom of radiators, the base of long horizontal pipe runs, and the low points of the circuit.

The consequences follow from where it settles. A layer at the bottom of a radiator insulates that part of the panel, so the surface stops giving out heat. In pipework it narrows the bore and makes the pump work harder. In a heat exchanger it restricts the narrow passages that carry the most heat, which is why a system full of debris often shows up as a boiler fault rather than a radiator complaint.

When a flush is the right answer, and when it is not

A flush treats a circulation problem caused by debris. It does not fix a problem that only looks similar. Balancing, for example, is a different matter: if the radiators nearest the boiler run hot and the furthest ones stay cool, the flow may simply be taking the path of least resistance, and adjusting the lockshield valves is the correct fix. A valve seized shut, a pump running at the wrong speed, or a thermostatic head stuck on its pin will each mimic a blockage.

So the sequence matters. Before agreeing to a flush, it is reasonable to expect the system to be looked at: radiators checked individually, valves and pump verified, and the water itself assessed. If the water is heavily contaminated and several radiators show the classic bottom-edge pattern, a flush is well founded. If one radiator is cold and the rest are fine, the answer is more likely to be that radiator or its valves.

Keeping it from coming straight back

A flush removes what has accumulated; it does nothing about the chemistry that produced it. If the system is cleaned and then refilled with nothing added, corrosion restarts immediately and the same material begins forming again. Two things change that. A corrosion inhibitor at the correct concentration slows the reaction that creates the debris in the first place. A filter fitted on the return catches what does form before it can circulate and settle.

Both need attention rather than installation and abandonment. Inhibitor is diluted every time the system is drained for a repair or a radiator change, and it degrades over time, so its level is something to check at a service rather than assume. A filter only helps while it is being emptied; one that has never been cleaned since fitting has stopped doing its job. Asking for the inhibitor level to be checked at the annual service is the single cheapest thing on this page.

Questions customers ask

Will a flush fix a radiator that is cold at the top?

Probably not, because that pattern usually points to trapped air rather than debris. Air rises to the top of a radiator, so it chills the top while the bottom stays warm; sludge sinks, so it chills the bottom while the top stays hot. A radiator cold at the top is normally a bleeding job, and if it needs bleeding repeatedly, the useful question is where the air keeps coming from. Recurring air can indicate a leak drawing air in or a fault worth investigating rather than repeating.

How do I know whether my system needs cleaning or just balancing?

Look at the pattern across the whole house rather than at one radiator. If the radiators furthest from the boiler are the cool ones and each is cool fairly evenly, that suggests flow distribution, which is a balancing question. If radiators in different parts of the house are cold specifically along the bottom edge, and bleeding produces dirty water, that suggests debris. Where it is genuinely unclear, the water condition settles it, and that is worth establishing before committing to the larger job.
